What Is War Veteran Grant
If you served as a soldier during the Second World War (1939-1945) or the Korean War (1950-1953) and now find it hard to support yourself, you might be able to get help through a war veteranโs grant. This grant is here to give you the financial support you deserve after your brave service. To check if your application is approved or to track its status, you can easily check SRD status here. Requirements To Qualify for Sassa War Veteran Grant?
To qualify for this grant, you must:
- Be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Live in South Africa.
- Be 60 years or older, or have a disability.
- Have served in the Second World War or the Korean War.
- Not receive any other social grant for yourself.
- Not be living in a state institution.
- Have an income below R86,280 if you’re single or R172,560 if you’re married.
- Have assets worth less than R1,227,600 if you’re single or R2,455,200 if you’re married.
Note: If you or your spouse own the house you live in, its value won’t be counted in the means test.
Documents Required For War Veteran Grant
Visit the Nearest SASSA Office with the following documents with you:
- Your 13-digit bar-coded ID (if you don’t have one, you’ll need to fill out an affidavit in front of a Commissioner of Oaths).
- Proof of your war service (e.g., a certificate of service).
- A medical report if you’re under 60 and cannot work due to disability.
- Proof of your marital status (affidavit if single, marriage certificate if married, divorce order if divorced, or death certificate if your spouse is deceased).
- If employed, bring your pay slips; if unemployed, bring your UIF blue book or discharge certificate.
- Bank statements for the last three months if you have a bank account.
- Information about any investments you have.
How To Apply For War Veteran Grant?
To apply for the grant, follow these steps:
- Complete the Application Form: This must be done in the presence of a SASSA officer. Only you or a SASSA official can fill out the form.
- Keep Your Receipt: After applying, youโll receive a receipt. Keep it safe as proof of your application.
- Enrol for Cash Payments: If you choose cash payments, the SASSA officer will tell you when to come back and what to bring.
- Processing Time: It could take up to three months to process your application. If itโs approved, youโll receive payment starting from the date you applied.
Note: If you’re too old or sick to travel, a family member or friend can apply on your behalf with a letter from you and/or a doctor’s note explaining why you can’t visit the office.
What If War Veteran Grant Is Not Approved?
If SASSA does not approve your application, they will inform you in writing why it was unsuccessful. If you disagree with their decision, you can appeal to the Minister of Social Development within 90 days of being notified.
How Much Is The War Veteran Grant Amount?
If you qualify, you will receive R2,200 per month. This money can help you cover your basic needs and live with dignity.
How To Collect Grant Payment?
SASSA (South African Social Security Agency) will make sure you get your grant in one of these ways:
- Cash: You can get cash at a specific pay point on a certain day.
- Bank Deposit: The money can be deposited into your bank or Postbank account (note that the bank might charge you a fee).
- Through an Institution: If a welfare organization is taking care of you, the grant can go to them.
Please Note: If you canโt collect the money yourself, you can choose someone to do it for you by appointing a procurator at the SASSA office or giving them power of attorney.
When May Your Grant Be Reviewed?
SASSA might review your grant from time to time. This is based on the income you declared when you applied. You’ll be notified three months before the review or when your life certificate (a document that proves you’re still alive) is due. If you get your money through the bank, an institution, or a procurator, you’ll need to fill in a life certificate at the SASSA office every year.
When May Your Grant Be Terminated?
Your grant may be suspended if:
- Your circumstances change.
- The outcome of a review requires it.
- You fail to cooperate during a review.
- You commit fraud or misrepresent yourself.
- There was an error in approving your grant.
When Will Your Grant End?
Your grant will stop if:
- You pass away.
- You are admitted to a state institution.
- You donโt claim your grant for three consecutive months.
- You leave the country.
Please Note: If you’re admitted to an institution that has a contract with the state to care for you, your grant will be reduced to 25% of the maximum amount after the third month of admission. The full grant will be reinstated once you’re discharged.
