Eligibility for the SASSA Child Grant

To receive the SASSA Child Grant, certain criteria must be met. Here’s a simple breakdown of who qualifies:

• Primary Caregiver: The person applying must be the primary caregiver of the child. This means they are responsible for the child’s daily needs and well-being.
• Age of the Child: The child must be under the age of 18.
• Residency: Both the child and the primary caregiver must live in South Africa.
• Income Requirements: The primary caregiver’s income must fall below a certain threshold. If they are single, their annual income must be less than R52,800. If they are married, the combined income must be less than R105,600 per year.
• South African Citizenship: The primary caregiver must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee.
• Child’s Birth Date: The child must have been born after 31 December 1993.
• Means Test: The applicant and their spouse must meet the requirements of the means test.
• Number of Children: The grant can be applied for a maximum of six non-biological children.
• State Care: The child cannot be cared for in a state institution.

How Much Is Grant Amount?

The amount of the Grant is R530 per month for each eligible child. For primary caregivers of orphaned children, there is an additional top-up of R260 per month. Therefore, if you are a primary caregiver for an orphaned child, you would receive a total of R790 per month for each child (R530 from the child grant and R260 as a top-up).

How To Collect Grant Payment

SASSA will pay your grant in one of these ways:

• Cash at a specific location on a certain day
• Direct deposit into your bank or Postbank account (the bank may charge a fee)
• Payment to an institution managing the grant

Note: If you can’t collect the money yourself, you can authorize someone at the SASSA office or give someone power of attorney to collect the grant for you.
